SHI SUXI   1924 - 2006

Grand Master, Shaolin monk of the 30th generation, spiritual leader of the Temple, Shi Suxi passed away peacefully in March 2006.

Shi Suxi entered Shaolin monastery in 1938, at the age of 14, and was one of the last monks to receive direct teachings from the Masters of the 19th century. He subsequently survived some of the darkest decades for Shaolin, with various conflicts and closures.

He was one of the last monks to remain in and around the Temple, in ruins, during the period 1950s - 1970s, defending it strenuously and preserving its traditions and teachings, at times in secrecy.

With the ribirth of Shaolin in the late '70s and '80s Shi Suxi became spiritual leader of the Temple and teacher of many prominent monks, whose mandate was and is to preserve the true essence of traditional Shaolin (Chan, WuShu, medicine) in the new millenium. First amongst them Shi De Yang, his direct pupil for 30 years.

In his last years Shi Suxi was gravely ill, condition which limited his activities but not his energy, charisma, harmony and friendship towards all those who had the fortune to meet him and learn from one of the last great Masters.
